Urban soil microbial community and microbial-related carbon storage are severely limited by sealing

چکیده

Abstract Purpose Urbanisation causes changes in land use, from natural or rural to urban, leading the sealing of soil and replacement vegetation by buildings, roads pavements. The process impacts properties services can lead negative consequences for microbial attributes processes soil. At present, information about community following is limited. As such, we investigated how physical chemical caused affect ecosystem services. Material methods Soils were sampled beneath impervious pavements (sealed) adjacent pervious greenspace areas (unsealed). Soil (total C, total N, C:N ratio water content) (microbial biomass N-mineralisation phospholipid fatty acids—PLFA) measured correlated. Results discussion A reduction content observed sealed soil, whilst increased. Sealed also presented a attributes, with low revealing suppressed activity. PLFA data positive correlations N content, suggesting that may be reduced as response properties. Furthermore, fungal:bacterial gram-positive:gram-negative bacterial ratios lower indicating degradation C sequestration consequential effect on storage. Conclusions Sealing notable subsequent upon activity storage potential.

Plant diversity increases soil microbial activity and soil carbon storage.

Plant diversity strongly influences ecosystem functions and services, such as soil carbon storage. However, the mechanisms underlying the positive plant diversity effects on soil carbon storage are poorly understood. We explored this relationship using long-term data from a grassland biodiversity experiment (The Jena Experiment) and radiocarbon ((14)C) modelling. Here we show that higher plant ...

Global soil carbon projections are improved by modelling microbial processes

Society relies on Earth system models (ESMs) to project future climate and carbon cycle feedbacks. However, the soil C response to climate change is highly uncertain in these models1,2 and they omit key biogeochemical mechanisms3–5. Specifically, the traditional approach in ESMs lacks direct microbial control over soil C dynamics6–8. Thus, we tested a new model that explicitly represents microb...

Labile soil carbon inputs mediate the soil microbial community composition and plant residue decomposition rates.

Root carbon (C) inputs may regulate decomposition rates in soil, and in this study we ask: how do labile C inputs regulate decomposition of plant residues, and soil microbial communities? In a 14 d laboratory incubation, we added C compounds often found in root exudates in seven different concentrations (0, 0.7, 1.4, 3.6, 7.2, 14.4 and 21.7 mg C g(-1) soil) to soils amended with and without (13...

Microbial control over carbon cycling in soil

A major thrust of terrestrial microbial ecology is focused on understanding when and how the composition of the microbial community affects the functioning of biogeochemical processes at the ecosystem scale (meters-to-kilometers and days-to-years). While research has demonstrated these linkages for physiologically and phylogenetically "narrow" processes such as trace gas emissions and nitrifica...

Tradeoffs in microbial carbon allocation may mediate soil carbon storage in future climates

Climate-induced changes in soil microbial physiology impact ecosystem carbon (C) storage and alter the rate of CO2 flux from soils to the atmosphere (Allison et al., 2010). The direction and magnitude of these microbial feedbacks depend on changes in saprotrophic bacterial and fungal C allocation in response to altered temperature, precipitation, and nutrient availability. Soil microbes may dif...
